Waste management, a major component of environmental sanitation, has over the years been a major headache of successive central governments and local authorities in Ghana. While the growth of towns and cities has resulted from increased population coupled with increased socioeconomic activities, there has not been a commensurate increase in essential infrastructure and logistics for effective and efficient waste management services to be delivered.
It is in this light that the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant Limited has been established to facelift the provision of waste management services in the country. The Plant was indeed set up to provide integrated processing and management of solid and liquid waste including domestic waste, hospital waste, industrial waste and e-waste.
Currently there is still a major problem with identification and acquisition of landfills for dumping of waste and it is expected that the Plant will help reduce the pressure and increase the lifespan of landfill sites in Accra
