The Accra Compost and Recycle Plant (ACARP) is constructing the Waste Water Treatment Plant at Adjen Kotoku to speed up efforts clear the notorious ‘Lavender Hill’ in Accra.

The waste water treatment plant will be complemented by the Mudor Faecal Treatment Plant.

‘Lavender Hill’ has become a source of an unpleasant stench at the Korle Gono area because untreated liquid waste from all over Accra is discharged into the sea from that point.

Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Collins Dauda, toured the two projects Wednesday to assess the progress of work at the two waste treatment plants.

He said Government was upbeat about ending the discharge of untreated liquid waste into the ocean.

“We do not support the discharge of raw liquid waste into the ocean; we don’t like it, we abhor it but it is difficult to address it with government intervention alone. It requires a huge investment to the able to address the situation,” he said after the tour.

He said government in partnership with Zoomlion is undertaking the two major projects under a Public Private Partnership (PPP).

ACARP Managing Director, Richard Amponsah, said the faecal treatment plant at Adjen Kotoku has been designed to receive and process faecal waste from Accra.

He said the plant was a direct response to the unacceptable practices at ‘Lavender Hill’.

The capacity of the plants was put at 1,000m³ of liquid waste a day while the treated water from the plant could be used for aquaculture, construction, watering of plants, among other uses.
